The little I knew about Myanmar came from a "No Reservations" episode several years back. I knew it was once affluent, then years of military rule/corruption, became one of the poorest. Military rule was dissolved in 2010, but remains influential. When we left L.A. in January, the country was in unrest and our visit was "iffy". Our luck (and peace) held out and we were able to dock.
It was a thought provoking three days. The picture below will show the enormous difference between the rich and poor. The city is full of temples and Buddhist monks. The roads into the city are beat up, but the electrical wires were the best we've seen in Asia. There are shiny new manufacturing plants, next dirt fields and hovels. There is a lot of trash blowing around. I could see the potential, but wonder if the country can shed the corrupt long enough for it to be developed.
The people were wonderful, hard working and surprisingly articulate. They too are hoping to get past the corruption.
